Joy Bussell
Joy works with individuals to achieve increased and sustained effectiveness in their lives and careers through focused learning. With a broad and successful commercial track record, her commercial insights enable her to work closely with executives wanting to develop their performance. The combination of Joy’s business experience and her academic grounding in both coaching and psychological theory, gives her the understanding, tools and techniques to approach each client in the most effective and appropriate way.
Coaching Style
Her clients describe her style as pragmatic and challenging and comment on Joy’s ability to quickly highlight the key issues bringing clarity to complex situations and discussions. Joy combines good listening skills, with empathy and the ability to challenge effectively. Joy has a solution focused approach to coaching that builds on and develops the client’s values and goals. She works collaboratively with the client and the system within which they operate. Joy’s aim is to work with her client to achieve their full potential – as defined by them.
Maternity Coaching
At Executive Coaching, Joy has particular experience and expertise in coaching senior women through the maternity transition. She has a special interest in providing career development and transition coaching for professional women. Joy carried out the first academic research project into the effectiveness of maternity coaching in retaining senior professional women. She has also delivered and published academic papers on this subject.
Joy works closely with Emma Spitz at ECC to incorporate her research findings within the already established maternity coaching programme that they provide. As a working mother with two children, Joy believes that coaching women at a time of transition is important and can empower them to re-define and attain their career goals. The unique combination of ECC’s unrivalled coaching experience and the latest academic research have created the most effective maternity coaching programme in the UK. Joy is currently scoping on a new research project into the challenges of continuing professional development through the ‘balance’ years.
Background
Before working with the Executive Coaching Consultancy, Joy spent twenty years in Sales and Marketing in both the IT and Exhibition Industries. Joy has direct experience of selling, marketing, project managing and directing trade exhibitions. With events under her direction becoming both market leaders as well as highly profitable. She has launched and directed trade exhibitions (and associated sales & marketing campaigns) in a wide variety of sectors including Market Research, Architecture, Libraries and Information Technology, as well as Risk Management. Joy has operated at board level, as Marketing Director, as well as holding non-executive board positions. She has a depth of commercial experience, which combined with her MA in Coaching that provides a unique framework and foundation for her work as a coach.
Qualifications
Joy has a degree in French and a Masters Degree in Coaching & Mentoring Practice. Her academic research (published in 2007) focused on whether coaching can support the retention of women and specifically the transition that women to maternity leave and back into the organisation. Her thesis is one of the first to look specifically at high-achieving women and examine how maternity coaching can address the current 'brain drain' of highly qualified women. Joy is member of the European Mentoring & Coaching Council, the Association for Coaching and the Oxford Brookes Mentoring & Coaching Society. She is working towards Accreditation Coach Status with the Association for Coaching. She has trained and is qualified to administer a variety of psychometric tools including MBTI and Thomas International (DISC). Joy is also a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.

Her clients come from a variety of sectors including banking, legal, education and consultancy. Current coaching clients include: Allen & Overy, Deutsche Bank, SJ Berwin, Herbert Smith, Nabarro and Laurence Graham.
